Selling iPods on Urban Outfitters: Apple’s Fifth-Generation iPods Quickly Sell Out

Urban Outfitters recently listed the fifth-generation iPod from Apple on their website, marking a significant milestone for the iconic device. Priced at $349, these vintage iPods quickly sold out, proving that there is still demand for this retro tech.

The journey of the iPod began on October 23, 2001, and last year, Apple declared the seventh-generation iPod touch as end-of-life, signaling the end of an era. However, Retrospekt, a vintage tech retailer, has breathed new life into the fifth-generation iPods by offering refurbished and restored units on the Urban Outfitters website. These refurbished iPods come with fresh batteries and 128GB of flash storage.

The listing on the retailer’s site mentioned that these iPod models date back to 2007 and each purchase includes an original Apple sync cable and earphones. Originally priced at $249, Urban Outfitters sold these refurbished units for $349, and they quickly sold out their entire stock.

Looking back, Apple was selling around 40 million iPods annually when they launched the iPhone. During the iPhone’s debut in January 2007, Steve Jobs described it as a “widescreen iPod with touch controls.” Later that year, the first iPod touch made its appearance, serving as the “training wheels for the iPhone.”

The fact that iPods are now considered vintage may make some feel old, but according to Urban Outfitters, these devices are a true example of vintage retro tech. Phone Arena reported that these refurbished iPods were recently available for purchase, but they are currently out of stock due to their popularity.

The specific number of units Urban Outfitters had remains undisclosed, and it is remarkable in this modern era for an MP3 player to be completely sold out. Nowadays, most people use their smartphones, often paired with wireless earbuds like the AirPods, to listen to music.

As for Retrospekt’s future plans, it remains uncertain whether they will refurbish more fifth-generation iPods or shift their focus to other models within the iPod series. However, considering the high demand that led to the quick sale of available units at Urban Outfitters, it would be wise for both the company and the retailer to continue capitalizing on the nostalgia trend that has driven consumers to make these purchases.
