AI Integration on the Rise in UK Heritage Organizations: Survey
According to a survey commissioned by The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), nearly a quarter of UK heritage organizations are now integrating AI tools into their operations, marking the growing prominence of artificial intelligence in the sector.
To explore the implications of this trend, the NLHF enlisted the expertise of Dr. Mathilde Pavis from the University of Reading. Pavis conducted extensive research to delve into the applications of AI in museums, galleries, libraries, and archives, aiming to assist the heritage sector in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the AI revolution.
The survey identified several primary applications of AI in heritage organizations, which include managing collections, enhancing the visitor experience, and supporting business activities. Notably, AI has also been used to generate marketing content, create transcripts of events, and add metadata tags to catalogs, thus making it easier to access collections online.
However, the survey findings also highlighted potential risks associated with the use of AI in heritage organizations, such as discrimination in AI’s identification of individuals in images, copyright infringement, and the dissemination of misinformation through chatbots.
In response to these concerns, Pavis proposed practical solutions, emphasizing the need for thorough testing, clear labeling, citation of AI-generated content, and the development of comprehensive policies around AI’s ethical and responsible use.
The NLHF’s recommendations outlined two primary avenues through which UK heritage organizations can engage with AI, involving the adaptation of open-source AI systems or utilizing off-the-shelf AI tools produced by the private or third sector. Collaboration with local universities and researchers was also highlighted as a beneficial strategy to prepare collections and adapt AI systems.
Examples of off-the-shelf AI tools include ChatGPT, Anniff, Transkribus, and Otter.ai, all of which provide solutions for various tasks. However, organizations are advised to verify the content and terms of use provided by these tools before incorporating them.
The report on AI integration in heritage organizations serves as a crucial resource for sector-wide collaboration on the challenges of AI innovation, ultimately positioning heritage institutions to realize the technology’s promise.
