“Apple Receives Google Backing for Adopting RCS, But Seeks Collaboration with GSMA”

Google throws its support behind Apple’s future RCS adoption, following an unexpected announcement by the tech giant that it plans to integrate RCS into the iPhone starting next year.

This move came as a shock to many, as Apple previously stated that it was already considering the RCS integration but wanted the GSM Association to be their partner in this venture.

Shortly after Apple’s announcement, Google publicly stated that it looks forward to collaborating with Apple to bring this technology to iOS.

The technology in focus is Google’s end-to-end (E2E) encrypted service designed for Android, offering both 1:1 and group message conversations in the Messages app. According to reports, Google was able to implement its RCS within a 2-year span.

Apple has clarified that it will be adding RCS support in its late 2024 iOS update, in line with the RCS Universal Profile published by the GSM Association. However, the company does not plan on replacing iMessage and will still maintain it for iPhone-to-iPhone or other Apple operating systems’ interoperability.

Google’s push for Apple to adopt RCS is driven by its desire to establish a universal messaging system that connects all devices. Apple, on the other hand, has maintained that iMessage is the best and most secure service for iPhone users. However, the company is open to the benefits of RCS, though it remains to be seen whether it will work with Google or seek partnership with the GSM Association.
