A Salmonella Outbreak Warning: CDC Encourages People to Avoid Certain Cantaloupe Brands
Consumers are being advised to steer clear of specific cantaloupe products due to an ongoing outbreak of salmonella infections in the United States. The outbreak, linked to Malichita or Rudy brand cantaloupes, has seen a significant increase in reported infections over the past two weeks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have disclosed the outbreak, with reported infections nearly tripling. Currently, at least 117 individuals across 34 states have fallen ill due to the bacteria, with 61 cases resulting in hospitalization and two fatalities.
Additionally, the outbreak has expanded to Canada, with health officials confirming 63 cases in five provinces, along with 17 hospitalizations and one fatality reported as of November 24th.
The CDC strongly advises against consuming cantaloupes or cantaloupe products associated with the Malichita or Rudy brands, which may bear stickers with the number “4050” or indicate “Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique.”
Several companies have initiated recalls of pre-cut cantaloupe products and fruit medleys due to potential exposure to Malichita or Rudy cantaloupes. Recalled products include mixed fruit cups, fruit trays, cantaloupe, and pineapple spears with specific sell-by dates.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has expanded its recall notice to include certain types of pineapples, watermelons, and honeydew melons that may have undergone processing alongside the recalled cantaloupe.
Consumers are encouraged to stay informed about these recalls and avoid consumption of cantaloupe products associated with the identified brands during this critical period.
