European Commission Sets Deadline for Amazon to Provide Information on Digital Services Act Compliance
The European Commission has issued a deadline of December 6 for Amazon to provide additional information regarding measures taken to protect customers from illegal products in response to the Digital Services Act (DSA).
Enforced in August, the DSA mandates stricter actions to remove illicit and harmful content from 19 major online platforms, with potential fines of up to 6% of global turnover for non-compliance. The regulation also imposes additional transparency and accountability measures on larger platforms.
The European Commission has specifically asked Amazon for information on its risk assessments, consumer protection measures, and compliance with DSA requirements related to the distribution of illegal goods and the defense of basic human rights.
In addition to Amazon, other major online platforms like AliExpress, Meta, Snap, TikTok, and YouTube have also received formal requests for information (RFIs) under the DSA. The European Commission has prioritized three key areas in its oversight of these platforms, including responses to global crises, child safety concerns, and e-commerce risks leading up to the holiday season.
Despite being categorized as a very large online platform under the DSA, Amazon has disputed this classification, leading to legal disputes. The EU General Court did not allow Amazon to evade certain DSA requirements, including the obligation to provide users with an option for recommendations not based on their profile.
Furthermore, the European Commission has requested data on compliance with child protection procedures from several major platforms, including TikTok, YouTube, Meta, and Snap.
The Commission is evaluating these actions, with the possibility of initiating official inquiries based on the information submitted. The regulatory oversight of these major platforms has intensified, with a focus on protecting consumer rights, particularly those of minors.
Overall, the move by the European Commission seeks to ensure greater transparency, accountability, and adherence to regulatory requirements among major online platforms, including Amazon, in order to safeguard consumer safety and rights in the digital space.
