Kyiv: A large-scale drone attack, described as Russia’s biggest since the invasion, rocked Ukraine’s capital on Thursday, resulting in injuries for five people and significant damage to the city, NBC News reported.
More than 70 attack drones were launched from two directions, with the majority targeting Kyiv, according to a statement from Ukraine’s Air Force on Telegram. Officials described it as a “record number” of drones and said 71 were intercepted, mainly in the Kyiv region.
The assault, which involved several defense measures, injured five people, including an 11-year-old girl, and caused fires and damage to a children’s nursery. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attack as an act of “wilful terror”, coinciding with the remembrance of the tragic 1932-33 Holodomor famine.
CNN reported that the attack also severed power to 77 residential structures and 120 establishments, raising concerns about potential threats to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. With 16,000 homes in the central Kyiv region still without power, the impact of such assaults is a matter of serious concern.
However, Ukrainian authorities swiftly restored power to affected areas, showcasing increased resilience to mitigate the impact of such attacks. This comes as the country faces enduring challenges in safeguarding its citizens and infrastructure against Russian aggression.
The attack serves as a reminder of the ongoing conflict and the resilience demonstrated by Ukraine in the face of adversity. President Zelenskiy continues to rally global support against Russian aggression and pursue the country’s potential path toward European Union membership.
The assault prompts a renewed focus on Ukraine’s vulnerability to energy infrastructure attacks and the country’s ongoing efforts to counter such threats, highlighting the need for international solidarity. Stay posted here at Tech Times for more updates on the situation.
