An Atlanta family recently experienced both the benefits and risks of tracking devices when they successfully used Apple’s AirTags to locate their stolen car but are still searching for their missing pet dog. The incident highlights the potential of tracking devices in our daily lives while also emphasizing the importance of responsible usage.
According to a report by AppleInsider, Sonya Reese and her son, Anthony, placed two AirTags inside their car and one on their pet dog, Dior, a Shih Tzu Pomeranian mix. When Anthony briefly entered a smoke shop, their car and Dior were stolen. However, they quickly realized that their belongings were equipped with AirTags.
Anthony explained, “I have two AirTags in the car, and one on the dog. As we are talking to the police, we can see that the AirTag was headed to the west side of Atlanta.” With the location of their car pinpointed, Sonya and Anthony decided to take matters into their own hands with the encouragement of law enforcement.
Following their AirTags’ trail, the determined duo eventually traced their stolen vehicle to an apartment complex using the Find My app. However, by the time the police arrived, the AirTags had been disconnected, leading to the suspects fleeing the scene.
While this case demonstrates the potential of AirTags in aiding the recovery of stolen property, another incident in Bakersfield, California serves as a reminder of the risks associated with their usage. Victoria Anna Marie Hampton tragically lost her life while attempting to track her stolen car using an AirTag. This serves as a chilling reminder that although AirTags offer undeniable benefits, their usage should be sensible and cautious.
Hampton’s fatal confrontation with the suspects occurred when she attempted to recover her stolen vehicle without involving the authorities. This tragic incident resulted in the arrest of four individuals.
It is essential to take into consideration both the advantages and risks of tracking devices like AirTags. Responsible usage and involving law enforcement when dealing with these situations can help ensure a safer outcome.
