Foxconn and NVIDIA Collaborate to Advance Self-Learning and Self-Driving Cars

Foxconn, a leading electronics manufacturer, and NVIDIA, a major player in the car industry, have announced a partnership to develop autonomous automotive fleets, robotic systems, and smart cities based on NVIDIA technologies. The announcement was made at Foxconn’s annual tech showcase in Taipei.

The collaboration between Foxconn and NVIDIA will involve the following plans:

  • Foxconn Smart EV will utilize Nvidia Drive Hyperion 9, a next-generation platform for autonomous automotive fleets. This platform is powered by Nvidia Drive Thor, which is a future automotive system-on-a-chip.
  • Foxconn Smart Manufacturing robotic systems will be built on the Nvidia Isaac autonomous mobile robot platform.
  • Foxconn Smart City will incorporate the Nvidia Metropolis intelligent video analytics platform.

According to CNN, the partnership aims to develop software platforms for the next generation of electric vehicles (EVs) through large computing systems powered by advanced chips. These systems will learn from everyday interactions to enhance the intelligence and capabilities of EVs.

The founder and CEO of NVIDIA, Jensen Huang, explained that the AI factory will process raw data and generate intelligence for the EVs. The EVs will collect data to improve the software and enhance their autonomy. Huang mentioned that the EVs will have “AI brains” to engage with drivers and passengers.

“As a contract manufacturer, Foxconn will offer highly automated and autonomous, AI-rich EVs featuring the upcoming NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion 9 platform. This will enable Foxconn and its automotive customers to realize a new era of functionally safe and secure software-defined cars,” stated the press release.

NVIDIA has collaborated with various automotive giants and startups, including Volvo Cars, Zoox, SAIC, and VinFast, to power their AI-based autonomous vehicles. Foxconn’s partnership with NVIDIA, announced in January, involves the production of electronic control units for cars using NVIDIA’s chips.

Foxconn has set ambitious goals to capture a significant portion of the electric car market. The company aims to build 5% of electric cars worldwide by 2025 and eventually produce 40% to 45% of EVs.
