OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, is set to release major updates next month with the aim of making its AI models more accessible to developers. The updates will reportedly include cost reductions of up to 20% for application makers, making it cheaper and faster to build software applications based on OpenAI’s AI models.
According to Reuters, OpenAI plans to introduce a range of new tools that will enhance the cost-effectiveness of its AI models. These updates are part of OpenAI’s strategy to position itself as a leading developer platform, in addition to catering to consumers.
One of the key updates is the addition of memory storage to OpenAI’s developer tools, which is expected to significantly reduce costs for developers. This stateful application program interface (API) update will allow for the storage of conversation history, addressing a common challenge for developers who experience increasing expenses when using OpenAI’s advanced models over time.
In addition, OpenAI models will also have “vision capabilities” or a “vision API” that enables developers to create applications capable of analyzing and describing images. These updates represent steps towards creating multi-modal capabilities for developers, allowing OpenAI’s models to generate images, audio, and videos in addition to text.
The new features will be unveiled on November 6 during OpenAI’s first-ever developer conference in San Francisco.
It’s worth noting that some of these AI multi-modal capabilities, such as voice conversations and image analysis, have already been introduced to consumers through ChatGPT. OpenAI has targeted a gradual release to consumers in order to refine and improve these features over time.
While OpenAI and ChatGPT have seen success among consumers, attracting developers has been more challenging. However, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, is actively courting developers and companies to make OpenAI models indispensable.
Investments from companies for OpenAI’s platforms have been less successful compared to consumer adoption, as investors reportedly diversify the AI models they use for experimentation. OpenAI’s plugins, which allow developers to create applications within ChatGPT, have struggled to gain traction among consumers.
However, OpenAI recently received a significant $10 billion investment from Microsoft, aiming to integrate the AI models into popular applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
In March, a letter signed by tech experts, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, called for a pause in AI development to properly manage the risks associated with AI models. While OpenAI did not sign the letter, Sam Altman acknowledged its merits and emphasized the company’s commitment to safety in development.
These updates and developments highlight OpenAI’s continued efforts to enhance its AI models, attract developers, and expand its presence in the AI industry.
