Apple Health Study Finds Playing Pickleball Beneficial to Players’ Health

An Apple Health study has revealed the health benefits of playing pickleball. The study compared the benefits of playing pickleball and tennis across different age groups.

The report is based on the Apple Heart and Movement Study, which was launched in 2019 with a focus on women’s health. The latest findings address the issue of inadequate sleep patterns.

Researchers analyzed over 250,000 workout sessions, including both pickleball and tennis. It was found that pickleball workouts were, on average, 9 minutes longer with a total duration of 90 minutes.

According to the study, pickleball players exhibited an average heart rate of 143 beats per minute, while tennis players had 152 beats per minute.

Dr. Calum MacRae, a cardiologist and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, who is involved in the study, commented on the research, stating that it offers valuable insights into participants’ behavior changes and their impact on health. The study’s findings have been made possible by the data collected from Apple Watch.

The study also demonstrates the growing popularity of pickleball, surpassing that of tennis workouts in July 2023. Pickleball activities have shown consistent growth throughout the year, unlike tennis, which follows a seasonal pattern.

The research also revealed that both tennis and pickleball are popular among adults of all age groups, although men are more likely to be active in these activities than women. Utah was found to have the highest recorded workouts per capita.

Dr. Sumbul Desai, Apple’s Vice President of Health, emphasizes the importance of scientific research in Apple’s health initiatives. Understanding the benefits of activities like pickleball and tennis for Apple Watch users is a crucial aspect of their work.

The Apple Heart and Movement Study was made possible through the collaboration of Apple, the American Heart Association, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

The aim of this study is to establish a connection between heart health and physical activity, specifically in the case of pickleball. More than 200,000 participants in the US were invited to take part in the study, with their permission to use their data for research.

Overall, the findings of the Apple Health study highlight the positive impact of pickleball on players’ health. The study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the benefits of physical activity for overall wellness.
