Possible rephrased title: Israel Considers Deploying ‘Iron Beam’ Laser System to Combat Hamas

Health

Israel is set to introduce a new laser weapon system to enhance its air defense capabilities amidst the ongoing conflict with Palestinian group Hamas, according to a report by Interesting Engineering. The laser beam system, known as Magen or ‘Light Shield,’ is part of Israel’s integrated missile defense system and is capable of shooting down incoming rockets, drones, artillery, and mortar bombs. Developed by Rafael, the system is a High Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS) of the 100kW class and is expected to be the first operational system of its kind.

The Iron Beam laser weapon, as described on Rafael’s website, has the ability to intercept various threats ranging from a few hundred meters to kilometers. It offers several advantages, including a limitless magazine, minimal collateral damage, and low interception costs. During tests and showcases, the system has been praised for its accuracy, with its laser focus able to target objects with the diameter of a coin in a 10-kilometer range.

The development of the Iron Beam system was financed and invested in by Israel’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development in 2022. The technology demonstrated successful intercepts of mortars, rockets, and anti-tank missiles in live-fire tests. Israel reportedly allocated over 500 million shekels ($148 million) for the laser-based missile interceptor last August, with plans to deploy it by 2025. This system could potentially reduce the cost of current defense systems like Iron Dome.

Amidst the conflict with Hamas, Israel’s missile defense system upgrade comes after the country faced a surprise multipronged rocket attack, during which over 2,200 rockets were fired. Israel’s advanced defense mechanism, Iron Dome, failed to defend against the attack due to the overwhelming number of rockets deployed. Hamas, with its reasonably priced missiles, was able to overpower Israel’s high-tech apparatus, resulting in a significant number of casualties. The conflict was fueled by resentment toward Israeli policy and treatment of Palestinians.

The introduction of the Iron Beam laser weapon system aims to strengthen Israel’s defense capabilities and mitigate the threats posed by ongoing conflicts. By incorporating advanced technology and targeting capabilities, Israel aims to enhance its air defense system and protect both military units and civilian populations. The deployment of this cutting-edge laser system signifies a significant development in Israel’s missile defense tactics, offering greater efficiency and effectiveness.
