Major adult sites in Texas are now displaying disclaimers about potential health risks associated with consuming adult content. This move comes after a US appeals court temporarily lifted an order blocking a Texas law that requires porn sites to verify users’ ages and display government health warnings.

According to The Verge, these disclaimers, which include claims that porn can be biologically addictive and impair brain development, can be seen on websites within the Vixen Media Group, such as Deeper, Blacked, and Vixen. These disclaimers are mandated by a Texas age verification law known as HB 1181, signed into law by Texas Governor Greg Abbott in June.

However, the law faced legal challenges from adult entertainment activists and companies like the Free Speech Coalition and Mindgeek. As a result, its implementation was temporarily blocked from its scheduled date of September.

The displayed disclaimers contain assertions that are not supported by scientific evidence, such as the claim that pornography is biologically addictive and has negative effects on brain function and development. The disclaimers also suggest links between porn and increased demand for prostitution, child exploitation, child pornography, and mental health issues.

A district judge halted the implementation of the Texas law in late August after concerns were raised about its constitutionality by adult entertainment activists and companies like Pornhub and Brazzers. The judge questioned the authenticity of the claims made in the disclaimers, noting that the health agency responsible for these declarations had not endorsed them despite being labeled “Texas Health and Human Services.”

Although the law was temporarily reinstated by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on September 19, its enforcement was put on hold while arguments for the future were scheduled. Several states have been implementing regulations to govern adult websites, influencing the operations of these platforms in different regions of the United States.

In response to Arkansas passing an age verification law, Pornhub’s operator, MindGeek, blocked users from Arkansas, as well as from other states with similar laws, including Mississippi, Utah, and Virginia.

Overall, the adult websites in Texas are now prominently displaying health warnings that make unverified claims about the risks associated with consuming adult content. These warnings are mandated by a Texas law that has faced legal challenges and temporarily suspended from implementation.
