Kia Corporation and Uber have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, committing the two companies to collaborate on Kia’s planned development and deployment of PBVs.

Kia, Uber Collaboration

In a bid to meet its 2040 climate commitment, Uber is actively encouraging more drivers to adopt electric vehicles (EVs).

Kia and Uber have formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding, outlining their intention to utilize Kia’s recently unveiled PBV modular electric vehicles for ride-hailing services.

Unveiled at CES in Las Vegas, The Verge reported that the Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) series encompasses a range of EVs constructed on a flexible vehicle architecture, featuring interchangeable body types.

The uniqueness of the PBV lies in its ability to transition from a minivan to a full-size van or a small truck, catering to diverse requirements. The driver cab remains constant while the remaining parts of the vehicle can be swapped, resembling a real-life Duplo set.

Among the potential configurations is the PV5, described by Kia as a midsize electric van specifically crafted for ride-hailing, delivery services, and utility purposes. Uber aims to integrate the PV5 into its fleet, aiming to accelerate its journey towards an all-electric presence across all markets by 2040.

Uber and Kia have entered into a partnership aimed at determining the optimal specifications for PBV models. The collaboration intends to explore the potential integration of technology and services, benefitting both drivers and users in the ride-hailing ecosystem.

Their joint efforts will encompass the development of proofs of concept, prototypes, and the production of PBVs customized to meet the specific needs of Uber platform drivers.

Encouraging Drivers to Adopt EVs

The motivation behind this collaboration stems from the global pressure on Uber to transition more of its drivers to electric vehicles, a move geared towards reducing tailpipe pollution and addressing climate change concerns.

However, Business Times reported that the challenge lies in convincing the vast number of independent contractor drivers associated with Uber to make the switch to EVs.

Many of these drivers utilize their vehicles for multiple gig economy platforms, making a universal transition difficult without risking their freelance status. Uber faces the intricate task of navigating this transition while maintaining the flexibility of its driver workforce.

Sangdae Kim, Head of Kia’s PBV Division, expressed through the press release the pivotal role that PBVs will play in revolutionizing mobility. The collaboration with Uber is poised to elevate Kia’s PBV development, tailoring vehicles to meet the specific needs of both drivers and users.

Kim emphasized a focus on advanced software and services, incorporating interactive In-Vehicle Infotainment and cutting-edge safety technology. This holds the potential to usher in novel experiences for both drivers and passengers.

This effort aims to create connected car experiences that enhance the overall ride. Anticipated outcomes include personalized riding environments featuring climate and sound control, along with the integration of interactive rear-seat entertainment systems, thereby redefining the conventional norms of transportation.

Uber spokesperson Conor Ferguson mentioned that the company plans to provide additional details regarding the financing options for acquiring Kia’s PBV vehicles as the availability date approaches.
