Nanoleaf Shapes: A Slick Addition to Smart Lighting
Nanoleaf has established itself as a leading brand in the market of smart lights, and its latest offering, the Nanoleaf Ultra Black Shapes, does not disappoint. With a sleek and sophisticated design, these wall panels are perfect for those looking to add a touch of creativity and style to their living spaces.

The Ultra Black Shapes lineup includes three different form factors: Canvas, Hexagons, and Triangles. In this review, we will be focusing on the Hexagons. These panels offer a simple setup and installation process, along with intuitive app controls, making them a quick and effective addition to any room.

Despite their dark coloring, the Ultra Black Shapes panels are surprisingly vibrant and bright. While they may not be powerful enough to illuminate an entire room, they do provide a pleasant ambiance. However, it is worth noting that the color does not reach the corners and edges of the panels, which can be a slight drawback for some users.

The nine-pack of panels allowed us to create a small yet visually striking accent piece. However, we believe these panels truly shine when used in larger designs. The controller can handle up to 500 panels, which is impressive, but the power cable can only supply up to 21 panels. This limitation may be a downside for those looking to create extensive designs.

In terms of pricing, the Nanoleaf Ultra Black Hexagons and Triangles are priced at $219.99, which puts them at the higher end of the smart light price range. However, considering the quality of the panels and the wide range of controls offered by the app, they do offer good value for money.

In terms of design, the Ultra Black Shapes panels have a sleek and imposing matte black front. They feel robust and well-made and sit impressively close to the wall. The installation process is made easier with the included strong mounting tape. The only minor design flaw is that the color does not fully reach the edges of the panels, which is more noticeable on the black backdrop.

Setting up the Ultra Black Shapes panels is a breeze through the Nanoleaf app, which offers a plethora of customization and design options. The app controls are intuitive and responsive, although we did experience a few bugs and quirks during our testing.

It’s worth mentioning that the color output and brightness of the Ultra Black panels are slightly impacted due to their design. Certain colors may appear slightly muddier than expected, especially lighter colors. However, the colors remain impressively vibrant despite this drawback.

Overall, the Nanoleaf Ultra Black Shapes panels are a wonderful addition to Nanoleaf’s wall paneling lineup. They are easy to use, offer great customization options, and add a touch of elegance to any space. While they may not be the brightest option on the market, they excel in providing ambiance and enhancing the overall aesthetics of a room.
