Strike Against Tesla in Sweden Expands as More Workers Join
Sweden’s metalworkers union has announced an expansion of its strike against Tesla. The strike initially affected around 130 mechanics across 10 Tesla workshops in seven Swedish cities. However, the strike has now grown in scope, with an additional 470 workers stationed at 17 facilities joining the labor action. This expansion effectively halts the repair of Tesla vehicles in Sweden.
While these workers will continue their regular duties on vehicles of other carmakers, they will abstain from servicing Tesla cars for the duration of the dispute. According to IF Metall, the industrial labor union representing the workers, discussions have been ongoing between the union and Tesla, with further meetings scheduled for Monday.
In Sweden, the labor market model is built on collective agreements negotiated on a sector-by-sector basis. These agreements cover almost 90 percent of the country’s workforce, ensuring standardized wages and working conditions. While many of Tesla’s Swedish employees are part of the IF Metall union, they are not currently covered by industry-wide collective bargaining agreements.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has consistently opposed calls for unionization among the company’s global workforce of 127,000 employees. In a show of support for IF Metall’s strike, the Swedish Transport Workers’ union has announced “sympathy measures.” They have warned that unless an agreement is reached, they will disrupt the loading and unloading of Tesla cars at four Swedish ports starting from November 7.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union has reached a tentative agreement with General Motors (GM), effectively ending a six-week period of labor strikes that impacted the three largest US automakers. This agreement follows similar deals with Stellantis and Ford, signaling a potential resolution to the strike affecting the “Big Three” automakers.
The UAW initiated the labor action on September 15, demanding higher wages and improvements, particularly concerning the shift towards electric vehicle production. The GM agreement has been praised by the UAW, as it includes substantial base wage increases, surpassing those received by GM workers in the past 22 years.
As the strike against Tesla intensifies in Sweden, it remains to be seen whether the negotiations between the metalworkers union and the electric carmaker will lead to an agreement. In the US, the resolution of the labor dispute between the UAW and GM brings hope for a swift conclusion to the strike affecting the major automakers.
