TechRadar’s review of The Invincible

Review

Starward Industries’ The Invincible was released on November 6, 2023, and is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Based on the 1964 book of the same name by Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, this hard science fiction game puts players in the role of an astrobiologist on the barren planet of Regis III.

Embarking on a journey of tense discovery and exploration, players will need to unravel the mysteries surrounding their crew and the strange events on the planet. With a focus on space exploration, robots, artificial intelligence, and humans’ approach to the unknown, The Invincible provides an intriguing setup and compelling gameplay.

The protagonist, Dr. Yasna, must rely on science and her methodical brain as she attempts to uncover the secrets of Regis III and find her fellow crewmates. The game features a slow, deliberate pace as players guide Yasna through the planet, discovering new areas, and unearthing what happened to her crewmates.

The atmosphere and design of The Invincible are its strongest points, with the Atompunk aesthetic and 60s sci-fi movie feel effectively executed. However, the game’s slow pacing and empty spaces on Regis III detract from the overall experience. While Yasna’s communications with Novik and the encouragement of exploration add depth to the game, some frustrations keep The Invincible from reaching its full potential.

Despite its drawbacks, The Invincible offers a compelling storyline, distinctive aesthetic, and memorable protagonist. Players looking for a unique, science-focused adventure will find much to enjoy in this game.
